We Seem to Have it Backwards - We Must Find Our Own Online Traffic

Infographic from SEOmoz

We seem to have it backwards! Most of us that sell online on Etsy, Zibbet, Artfire, Shopify, Bonanza, and a zillion other selling venues - we have it wrong.

So many times I see in forums that there are no views, asking what they are doing wrong, and wondering when the traffic will kick in. "Build it and they will come" is not what happens online. You have to work at it hard and consistently if you want to reap the benefits of traffic.

It is OUR responsibility to drive traffic to our own shops or our own websites. The venues will bring a certain amount of traffic, but it is like thousands of people milling around a mall and your shop is way back in a dark corner.

I found an excellent article titled 11 Ways to Drive Gobs of Traffic to Your Website

  1. I, too, get easily annoyed by people with the "build it and they will come" mentality for their online shops. It just doesn't work that way.

Thank you for sharing this article - I will have to make some time to review it and pick my 4 to start working extra hard on.

  2. Thank you for posting this, really useful info. And I got it from Connie's posting on FB!

I will also stop by your jewelry blog, GalleriaLinda. I do a blog on birthstones, esoterica, life stories, etc. http://LivingatnightJewels.wordpress.com

  3. Great article, wonderful advice. Happy to see Zibbet up there in your article listed 2nd next to Etsy. I have 4 shops on Zibbet with great traffic and sufficient sales. I'll be studying the article by John Doherty to see how I can make further improvements.
    Thanks,

  6. Yes!! The "Build it and they will come" mentality drives me crazy! I don't like to see folks go around and blame the venue they are on for NO traffic. Online selling is harder than selling in a brick and mortar store (although it is not easy either) people just do not understand how important it is to constantly promote in as many ways as you can. I have been slacking lately also, have been so busy with some health issues, but I must get back to it!! I have 3 shops on Zibbet, and I love it there. Of course I want more sales, but I know they will come with my hard work at promoting, just takes time and consistency! I also do Z Box which is a way to HELP promote Zibbet shops! It's a sampler box promotion for shops on Zibbet! http://www.zibbet.com/samplezbox and one of my other shops is a bath & body shop http://www.zibbet.com/rwestdesigns THANK YOU for sharing the article also, we can always use more tips!! Also like that Zibbet is right up there with Etsy! ZIbbet rocks!!

  8. Wow, this article is absolutely amazing. I picked it up off iCraft and was surprised you didn't have more comments there. There are great links attached to each point that help explain things further and go more in depth. The article really help to focus some ideas I already and, reinforce some of what I am already doing, and gave me more ideas. I had to set up a time line to start implementing the different methods or I would be glued to my computer 24/7. I had already been trying to improve my search and keywords with excellent results but still found ways to further improve what I am doing. Thanks for sharing this.
